Skills To Learn Classes

Skills To Learn Inc. offers programs for children who are 6-13 years old who require support in improving their social cognition.

We offer weekly, small group programs with same-aged peers.

Our programs offer a parent education component to help with the generalization of skills outside of the classroom.

Our program curriculum uses elements of the Social Thinking Curriculum by Michelle Garcia Winner, The Zones Of Regulation by Leah Kuypers, R.O.P.E.S by Patricia Schetter and Unstuck and On Target by Lynn Cannon, Katie Alexander, Monica Adler Werner and Laura Anthony.

We are approved as a Service Provider for Behavioural Developmental Supports and can direct bill to FSCD for those families approved for funding.

Skills To Learn Club is a weekly club that helps students learn ways to improve their peer relations, group work skills and overall social interactions. It is offered at school during lunch break.

The club is for students in grades 1 through 7 and has already been successfully implemented as a lunch club for children in grades 6 and 7.

Class sizes are limited to 10 students.

The lessons consist of PowerPoint presentations, video modelling, role play and group discussions.

Each student is given a workbook and teachers are emailed weekly to encourage the generalization of skills.

"Our 13-year-old son, Pete has taken part in all of the different levels of Skills to Learn programs over the last 7 years.  We have always been impressed in the growth Pete has made each time he has taken part in the innovative program that Denise and Monique facilitate.

Both Denise and Monique bring an extensive wealth of experience to the classes.  They both are able to quickly understand each of the children in the group and the best way to tailor their approach in presenting the teaching objectives to the specific child. "

"For a child with Autism one of the biggest challenges is learning how to engage in socially appropriate behaviour. Over the last 3 years, the Skills to Learn Program has helped our son, who has Autism and ADHD, learn effective methods of communicating with his peers and applying various tools and techniques in many social settings on a daily basis.  It has also helped our family understand how to support him at school and in the community."

"Skills to learn has helped us as a family to identify small, medium and large issues in everyday life. It’s given my kids language to express what’s often scary and unmanageable.

Children often don’t have the language to explain feelings.

Children often see problems as a big deal and find it difficult to problem solve, using this tool/formula it helps children manage stresses and break down problems/barriers so they become more manageable and in return provide a healthier response to their feelings or frustrations.

We are so grateful for this tool. "
